Info

Taiko Risshiden is a series of simulation RPGs set in Sengoku Japan that goes back to the early ’90s. The developer KOEI just released a special edition of the fifth and most recent game that included soundtracks* for all five games, and I’ve never listened to any of them until now.

The first game was released in 1992 for the PC-98, and as was standard for KOEI at the time, the album for it is actually arranged by the original composer (which is why I put an asterisk after “soundtracks” earlier), Michiru Oshima in this case. There are some orchestral tracks and piano, which isn’t unusual for her work, but the synthier pieces are my highlights here. Lots of pretty, slow- to medium-tempo music, with a couple of jazz tracks. Pretty nice!

Recommended tracks:

  • Vermillion ~ Telling Spring Notes” really goes ham on the piano in the second half

  • Pear Koto” is the only piece on the album that uses traditional Japanese instruments

  • Rage” is synthesizer overload with a bunch of sax on top

(track titles are unofficial translations from VGMdb)
