Been a little quiet since I’ve been getting a few posts ready for later publishing (nothing exciting like getting advance copies of something, just miscellaneous timing issues), but let’s sneak in one more 2024 game soundtrack before the halftime buzzer goes off. Here’s a new soundtrack by Cohost’s very own @quarkimo for a cutesy, physics-based mountain climbing game. It features a semi-ambient style not atypical for this artist, with plenty of piano mixed with other sequenced acoustic instruments and a good amount of synths. A number of the tracks reminded me a little bit of the area themes from Pikmin 4, with similar instrumentation and emotions, though with more digital fusion-pilled harmonic and rhythmic composition.
Really great soundtrack! Consistently enjoyable chords, consistently enjoyable textures, consistently enjoyable everything.
Recommended tracks:
-
“Mountaineer Maker” feels like it’s intentionally riffing off Nintendo system music with that guitar sample and title that sounds like “Mii Maker”
-
“Little Steps” has some fun free phrasing throughout
-
“Left Dangling” was the spookiest piece in the soundtrack
-
“Enigmatic Bulb (Zone 3)” starts off chill and assuming before getting weird (enigmatic…???) at 0:58 and then mostly staying there for the rest of the piece with dissonance and funny noises
-
“Race to the Top!” jams out the hardest that anything jams out in this video game
-
“Celestial Summit (Zone 4)” has a tricky rhythmic pattern with some extra beats that shows up a few times, and the entire track falls away for the second half with a bunch of interesting noises in it (the rhythmic pattern is here too!)
