Space Invaders Virtual Collection (VB, 1995)

Game info: Wikipedia
Listening: game rip (missing a jingle, absolutely horrid quality)

Credits

Sound: Fumito Tamayama

The sound credit in the game’s high score table is only to “F.TAMAYAMA,” and as far as I can tell neither Fumito Tamayama nor his old company Studio Cliche have ever claimed to have worked on the game, but it’s a very uncommon combination of first initial & last name and “Virtual Boy” was listed generically as one of the platforms Studio Cliche has worked on, so this seems fine.

Info

This is a port of the first two arcade Space Invaders games from the late ’70s to the Virtual Boy, with some additional 3D slapped on top for good measure. As you might be aware, neither of those game have any music whatsoever, just (pitched) sound effects while you’re playing, and they didn’t add any in-game music to this collection. They did add a few jingles for the intro, title screen, and time attack name entry screen though, as well as a short loop for the game selection menu, so there’s almost a whole entire minute of music!!

Is this even worth posting about…? There’s only an absolutely ass-terrible rip of this game so you can’t even listen to what’s there. Well anyway.

The audio was done by Fumito Tamayama, a composer I honestly don’t know that well but who has worked on a few fun soundtracks like Socket and Hotdog Storm, neither of which have breakdowns so I don’t even know what he wrote for them specifically, if anything. He did capture/recreate the original Space Invaders sound effects pretty well though, as far as I can tell.

Recommended track:

  • Menu” is, well my hands are kinda tied here in what I can post given the game has exactly one piece of music longer than ten seconds, though this is kind of interestingly tense and chromatic for a mode select screen

(track title is unofficial)
