Here’s a neat looking, super pixelated body horror walking sim by a Swedish team that came out a couple of months ago. The composer is Hudson Bikichky, who works for production company Fairfield Audio but doesn’t otherwise have a particularly strong online presence or portfolio, just random promotional bios alluding to works for companies like Disney and Warner Bros. without naming the works specifically and posting EDM to SoundCloud as a teenager (presumably under a different name or on an account that’s since been wiped).
The soundtrack for Eclipsium is mostly but not entirely ambient, very electronic throughout with several tracks incorporating orchestra, piano, or spooky vox (can’t have a horror game without spooky vox in the BGM at least once). A lot of the music doesn’t necessarily go for a downright evil sound—dark, eerie, foreboding, or a little tense, sure, but mostly not overpoweringly menacing or noisy. There is some noise in there though, and I do enjoy me some noise, so that’s nice.
The production’s pretty good: lots of good sound textures mixing synths and instruments with a liberal coating of electronic effects to keep things dynamic and entertaining. While there is a little bit of messing around with pitch bending and time signatures, I wouldn’t say that too many of the tracks get particularly wild on a purely compositional level, but there’s more than enough done with the sound design to keep things fun throughout.
Recommended tracks:
-
“Deeper Into Greater Pain” sounds like an orchestra tuning sometimes
-
“Mass Hysteria” is one of the noisier tracks
-
“Walking the Whaleyard” has some real pleasant tuned percussion riffs
-
“Styx” hits you with a little 5/4 action when the drums come in
-
“March of the Pigs” has a bunch of funny squeaky violin going absolutely foolish
