Here’s a game that I’m surprised doesn’t have a soundtrack release by now? I kinda just expect every commercial indie game of this size to just automatically have its soundtrack available on launch with it on Steam or on the composer’s Bandcamp. Maybe my expectations are just out of whack.
Anyway, Bombun is a short, throwback 3D bomb-throwing platformer inspired mechanically and aesthetically by Bomberman Hero for the N64, though it has more of a time attack focus than the scoring focus that Hero does. The aesthetic inspiration is very present in the music, with Bombun also having a drum and bass soundtrack, though its flavor is slightly different; while Bomberman Hero’s soundtrack is noisier, more aggressive, and more riff-focused, Bombun’s soundtrack is smoother, a little chiller, and a little more melodic. I wouldn’t say it’s that cute of a soundtrack, but it’s definitely a little bit cuter than Bomberman Hero because of the melodic writing and some brighter instrumentation. Still plenty of breakbeats and transposing chords to go around, though, which is what the children crave.
Recommended tracks:
-
“Tundra” is the most open-sounding song in the game, some of the movement in the background pad is pretty nice
-
“Volcano” has some classic reverbed-up piano licks
-
“Cyberspace” naturally has a bunch of modem noises in it
(track titles are unofficial)
