Fantavision 202X (PS5, 2023)

Game info: Sony
Listening: iTunes/Apple Music, Amazon

Info

Ah, here’s the reason I’m listening to these again, because a third game just came out last month! It’s March and I’m finally making my first post about 2023 VGM? I might be falling a little behind here [ralph_wiggum_im_in_danger.jpg]

So there are no new compositions whatsoever here; every single track is a remix of something from either the first or second game. Like the remixes in Futari, most of the remixes here are also very similar to the originals, just with slightly different instrumentation or whatever. I actually don’t have a super good impression of some of the remixes, a few sound a little “cheaper” to me as a result of missing layers or some flimsier-sounding synths. So if you happen to have the first two soundtracks already, I think this release is fairly disposable, though if you don’t, it’s not bad for an easy digital purchase to get your hands on some Fantavision music.

Recommended tracks:

  • I think the extended intro of “Subspace 2” is cool because I often find myself losing the downbeat of the bassline by an eighth before the kick starts at 0:55 in a way that doesn’t happen in earlier versions of the song

  • Infinity 2” is the one example where I prefer the stripped-down vibe of the 202X version over the originals, though I definitely miss the random slowdown that happens in the originals
