This is the fourth overall album (third full) by Trussonic, a Japanese prog jazz trio led by pianist Towa Kitagawa. Her cohorts on this one are Jiro Okada on bass and a rotating drum slot of Yoichiro Yamauchi, Tappi Iwase, and Manabu Hashimoto. I found her because it was recently announced that she’s the new pianist for the proggish chamber music ensemble Acoustic Asturias, so I checked her out and she seems pretty cool.
I suppose I’ve already described the album: “prog jazz trio” with piano, bass, and drums that’s “pretty cool.” Lots of odd time signatures, fast rhythm changes, and noodling. The first half of the album are random tracks and then second half is a suite, “Forest in the dark,” which depicts a person lost in a dark forest and has a bit more of a classical sound to it with some additional instrumentation here and there.
Recommended tracks:
-
“Into the silent echoes” is the second-most overtly straight prog rock track on the album (behind “Exotica”)
-
“Suite ‘Forest in the dark’ I. Prologue I” starts off with some extremely fast bass picking that I thought was a glitch effect at first
-
“Suite ‘Forest in the dark’ III. Maze” has an extremely loud piano slam in it and some cool fast simultaneous piano and bass playing near the end
