Listening/music info: soundtrack album
Info
Time for yet another entry in the storied Shovel Knight franchise by storied composer Jake Kaufman. I think if you’re familiar at all with the music from the previous games, then you’ll know what to expect here: a chiptune soundtrack where the stage themes smash together elements of funk, electronica, and medieval music and the boss themes hit you hard with rock/prog. The big difference here is that these aren’t NES chiptunes, but rather PC-88/PC-98 chiptunes for the YM2608 (which is very similar in capability to the FM chip in the Genesis, the YM2612, so this may sound like a Genesis soundtrack if you have that as a reference point). It’s cool to see virt doing an FM soundtrack again, since it’s been quite a while since the last one.
Recommended tracks:
-
“Overground (Main Layer)” reminds me a lot of Light Crusader in its composition and instrumentation, which is a great comparison point because I love that soundtrack
-
“Fully Furnaced (Smelt Works)” is some Contra music, which virt loves writing
-
“Boss – The Chitinous” has rapidly panning mallet lines, which is always a plus in my book
-
“Who Needs Honor (Drill Knight’s Castle)” has that funky VGM bass going
