Here’s a game and composer I’d both never heard of before until some guy (surasshu) tweeted about the soundtrack a week ago. The game’s a first-person arena shooter, and the music you’ve got to accompany you while blasting some monsters is some prog metal. Although let’s be honest here, I didn’t really need to tell you what genre the music is; all I had to do was say the tracks are titled stuff like “Cathedral of the Skull King” and “Ripped from the Womb of Oblivion” and you would have just known.
The soundtrack was produced with various ’90s keyboards and sound modules, so it’s got that delightfully synthetic sound that you know I love. The metal is darker-tinged and gets heavy here and there, but I wouldn’t say it’s overly horror-themed or brutal in tone. Enjoyable!
Recommended tracks:
-
“Solace of the Auroral Pentagram” is some spooky ambience
-
“Flesh Tempered like Weathered Steel” has some cool syncopated hits in the 2:09 section, and there’s one specific dissonant bell chime at 2:52 that makes me feel something every time I hear it
