Here’s a shmup I don’t know that much about with music by a composer I know even less about, Fumihito Uekusa. He’s done music for other shmups by this developer (Neotro) which I’ve also never heard of before, and also random stuff like this Final Fantasy XV development gallery.
The soundtrack is largely “electronica” but perhaps a bit lower BPM and haunted house-spooky than you might expect from a shmup, I probably wouldn’t have guessed the game’s genre on my first try from just the music alone. Some of the audio design reminded me a little of Dustforce, in the combo of lower-fi/chiptune synths, piano, and reverb, but otherwise it’s pretty different so don’t go in expecting more Terence Lee. The music’s pretty cool, it definitely fits the vibe of fighting your way through a looping nightmare well.
The CD version of the soundtrack, only available with the special edition of the game for consoles, also includes a bonus FM arrangement by Keishi Yonao.
Recommended tracks:
-
“Majolica Majorca (World1)” actually is kind of Dustforce-y compositionally too, though with more active drums and spicier chords
-
“Clockwork Psychic Chase (World5 MidBoss)” is the track that I think most directly just sounds like shmup music
-
“Paranoid (World7-1)” is a super fucked jam that honestly sounds more like Keishi Yonao than the actual Yonao arrangement
-
“Alternate Soul (Last Boss)” has a sick string stab section at 1:50
