beatmania IIDX 30 RESIDENT ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK (2023)

Info

It’s a new beatmania IIDX soundtrack! There are a whole lot of these! As a result I’m not really sure exactly what I should say, if anything, about this. A flagship rhythm game series of Konami, running since 1999, featuring music in a whole bunch of (generally uptempo) electronic styles with some occasional other random nonsense. Lots of vocals, in typical EDM or more general pop styles. If you enjoy stereotypical rhythm game music, then this is certainly stereotypical rhythm game music! I personally tend to find the music from other Konami series like GITADORA and pop’n music a lot more interesting than beatmania.

The first two discs have music from the latest IIDX entry, beatmania IIDX 30 RESIDENT from 2022, and then the last two discs are additional music from the previous game, 29 CastHour, which was added after its first soundtrack was released (this is pretty standard practice for Konami). As is also pretty standard practice for Konami, the last few tracks on both discs 2 & 4 are extended versions of some of the songs from RESIDENT and CastHour.

Recommended tracks:

  • Meissa” (Yvya) gets suddenly prog at 0:50 (well the genre is “progressive drum’n’bass” but in that context it’s not usually that kind of prog)

  • Seraph” (satella, vo. Itsuki Natsume) has some nice chords, and the phrasing in the first 6/4 section at 0:19 trips me up sometimes (well it’s a rhythm game right)

  • Night Fiction” (Masato Nakayama, vo. CHAN) has a cool intro with a reverb-drenched percussive sound and bass

  • Blue Grotto” (Ujico*) is somehow both intense and restrained, and features a nice amount of mallet percussion
