New game jam soundtrack by Zan-zan-zawa-veia let’s fuckin’ go y’all. ZZZV is a UK musician who works primarily in MIDI/chiptune, and they have an extremely distinctive style: darkish, dungeon-flavored music mixed with prog/funk influences and unpredictable chord changes that make me feel a certain way. They’re one of a few composers who instantly come to mind when I think about musicians whose work feels like it falls out of a portal from another dimension: instantly, uniquely identifiable as them and only them.
Their soundtrack work consists primarily of stuff for either Doom maps or tiny li’l games, and Poisoned Daggers is the latter. It’s an entry for the weeklong Dungeon Crawler Jam 2023, and music I described as “dungeon-flavored” sounds to me like it’d be a pretty good fit for a dungeon crawler! We’ve got a foreboding, FM-y (maybe with some other chippy sounds mixed in too) soundtrack here to accompany you as you fight through a maze devoted to a bloodlusting god.
Recommended tracks:
-
“Footprint of the Elephant” has some weird, syncopated phrasing in the second half, which is something I definitely associate with ZZZV
-
“Ringing Steel” has a cool countermelodic section at 1:27
