← Soundtrack announcement post
So it’s time for the part where we have a laugh about how literally everything I said was incorrect! (It wasn’t quite that bad. (But it was pretty bad.)) I’ll spoiler the same stuff I spoilered last time.
For your own reference, the credits can be found on VGMdb, since there are a bunch of tracks I didn’t really cover in my previous post: https://vgmdb.net/album/126713
Multiplayer
Deep Cut music: Toshiyuki Sudo (my guess: Sudo)
Got this one right, but it felt like a gimme from the staff interview lmao. Sudo did all Deep Cut music, including the news theme.
C-Side songs: Ryo Nagamatsu (my guess: Minegishi)
This one is pretty surprising to me because Minegishi has definitely written songs exactly like these, but it’s not like Nagamatsu hasn’t written rock before and harmonically I buy that they’re him.
Front Roe songs: Toru Minegishi (my guess: Minegishi)
Yeah
Damp Socks songs: Ryo Nagamatsu (my guess: Nagamatsu)
Yeah
Salmon Run: Ryo Nagamatsu (my guess: Nagamatsu)
Yeah
Lobby: mostly Yumi Takahashi, with Ryo Nagamatsu, Toru Minegishi, and Toshiyuki Sudo (my guess: Minegishi + Nagamatsu)
Turns out I was right in speculating a lot of different people did write these, though it ended up these were actually Takahashi’s primary contribution to the soundtrack (plus some town music) and she did the guitary ones I thought were Minegishi. I did correctly identify exactly one song (by Nagamatsu) though so that’s cool.
Town
Plaza ambience: Yumi Takahashi + Sayako Doi (my guess: Minegishi)
I’m surprised Minegishi had absolutely nothing to do with this this time around, but the little area songs for sure sound like they’re by new composers, so it doesn’t surprise me to see Takahashi and Doi here.
Shops: Yumi Takahashi (my guess: Sudo)
Looks like Takahashi’s also pretty good at the Nintendo in-house cutejazz style
The Shoal: Sayako Doi (my guess: Minegishi)
I think the chiptune instrumentation tripped me up on this one, because listening again this is easily Doi: the whole tone-ness and rhythmic intricacy is absolutely Metroid Dread but cute.
Tableturf Battle: Sayako Doi (my guess: Minegishi)
These honestly mostly don’t really feel like Doi to me, even after knowing that Doi did all of them; they’re definitely her least interesting contributions to the soundtrack to me. However, in retrospect, the synth design in the deck edit theme specifically does sound like her.
Singleplayer
Octo Canyon: Toru Minegishi (my guess: Takahashi + Doi)
I outsmarted myself by guessing these could be an intentional pastiche of Minegishi’s past songs, turns out it was just Minegishi doing them lmao. “Watch as they of course just end up being Minegishi doing some new things because it’s a new game” indeed!
Alterna – Maps: Sayako Doi (my guess: Doi)
I got this completely right and I want it put on my tombstone that I was completely right. Between these, the theme for the Shoal, and a bunch of music from Metroid Dread she must have done now, Doi has put forward a strong case for being my favorite Nintendo composer.
Alterna – Stages: mostly Toru Minegishi, with Toshiyuki Sudo & Ryo Nagamatsu (my guess: Takahashi)
Got this one completely wrong! Just Minegishi and Nagamatsu doing the singleplayer campaign music again. Sudo ended up doing the odd time drum ‘n’ bass track, which in retrospect is obvious on account of all the staccato instruments playing for one second.
Alterna – Bosses (Deep Cut): Toshiyuki Sudo (my guess: Takahashi)
This was also just Sudo, who did every Deep Cut song.
Alterna Space Center – Deep Cut songs (stages 2-5): Toshiyuki Sudo (my guess: Takahashi)
Again, all Deep Cut songs were just by Sudo. Takahashi didn’t contribute anything to the soundtrack that was like the one piece of hers that I’m really familiar with.
Alterna Space Center – Grizzco remixes (map, final boss phases 1-3): Sayako Doi (map) + Ryo Nagamatsu (boss) (my guess: Nagamatsu)
It never occurred to me that Doi could have done the final area map theme along with every other map theme, but it seems obvious when I put it that way, doesn’t it? The final boss theme was absolutely unhinged in a Nagamatsu-specific way though.
“Calamari Inkantation 3MIX” (final boss, last phase): Toshiyuki Sudo (my guess: Sudo)
This was plainly by the same person who did “Anarchy Rainbow”
“Wave Goodbye” (credits): Shiho Fujii (my guess: Fujii)
Yeah
