Whoops, turns out I completely missed a game released last month with music by two composers I think are cool. How embarrassing! Baycun’s contributed songs to games like Yo! Noid II: Enter the Void and Lantern Lagoon, and ViRiX Dreamcore was the lead composer on CROSSNIQ+. All of those games have throwback vibes to PS1/2-era games, and surprise: this new one does too! Here’s VIVIDLOPE.

It’s a Q*bert-esque puzzley action game where you change tile colors by walking on them, except here you’re doing it on weird 3D structures where gravity changes as you walk around them. It’s definitely the kind of concept you’d see explored by a random Dreamcast game from 2000 made by a company you’ve never heard of that only released three video games ever, so to match that it comes with period trippy environmental visuals and period jungley music with breakbeats and fake piano and transposing chords. Obviously this is the kind of stuff I’d be into, and both composers came up with a pretty fun soundtrack.

Recommended tracks:

  • Vividviolence” (Baycun) is indeed one of the more violent tracks on the soundtrack, with big drums and angular rhythms

  • Vividvoltaic” (Baycun) gets into DnB territory

  • Vividveil” (Baycun) starts off with a bit of a stock music feel before activating the Beats

  • Vividvista” (ViRiX) has my favorite chord changes on the soundtrack
