Info
Here’s the only game soundtrack composed by pianist/keyboardist Motokazu Shinoda, who has been involved a lot of adjacent projects like arranged albums, multimedia CD-ROMs for the PC, synthesizer presets & demo songs, etc. Crusader of Centy was added to the Switch Online emulator offerings a couple of months ago, and I checked it out because I was looking for something quick to play in between other games, and it was interesting! It’s a fantasy Zelda-like with a little bit more depth to the story and ability system than you might expect (though unfortunately the former is hampered by the iffy translation), and also you can jump in a toilet.
The music is generally pretty standard chipper adventure music, invoking the standard musical tropes for the beach area and the desert area and the underwater area and so on. You’ll find a good amount of rock, jazz, and funk influence in the soundtrack, also not at all surprising to run across in a video game soundtrack. I’d also rate it above average on the “nice chord progressions” scale. Pretty fun!
Recommended tracks:
-
“Opening Theme” is one of the better opening movie themes I’ve heard recently
-
“Fortuneteller” is pretty goofy and starts off with an accompaniment line that kind of ignores what the rest of the track is doing in its phrasing
-
“Battle 2” is exceedingly funky and has some cool sax(?) solos
(track titles are unofficial)
