“Asagao” and “Itsudemo” from iMovie (iOS, 2019)

Asuka Ito is a composer who worked at Nintendo for a few years, composing for the Rhythm Heaven series and Pilotwings Resort and some other stuff. In 2014, she moved to the U.S. and started writing music for short films and TV series, which isn’t something you see too often from Japanese gamedev in-house composers.

I was checking out her website for the first time in a while and just found out that she apparently wrote two backing tracks for the iOS version of iMovie, Apple’s free, entry-level video editor. The desktop version has like eight different pieces of background music you can freely use in the movies you make, but it appears that the iOS version has quite a bit more? I’ve never used it or seen it in action, so this is new information for me.

Anyway, her two contributions are extremely Nintendocore haha, very cute with sparse and staccato instrumentation. She has the two tracks uploaded to her YouTube channel with videos by Io Kurihara, a graphic designer who also used to work at Nintendo.
