GameFAQs Video Game Music Contest 18 picks, part 1

→ Part 2

Been a bit busy the last few days getting ready to go on vacation, and of course the day I get here is the same day the yearly GameFAQs forum VGM contest started. There’s a huge scrum for a week and a half where people throw a bunch of songs into the pot and then boost other people’s nominations they like, with the top vote-getters making it in. So I’m gonna be mostly listening to tracks from there for a while rather than albumposting. I didn’t do this last year, but I thought it might be fun this year to post some tracks that catch my ear as I skim through [checks notes] 514 unique nominations so far yes this always takes a while

HEAVEN BURNS RED – “Tower of Memories”

Composed by MANYO

Really cool sound design in this one. I’ve heard a little bit here and there by MANYO, but not a whole lot and didn’t know he was capable of this kinda stuff. The punchy rhythm at 1:42 is great too, catches me off guard and makes me think the time signature has changed to 5 (it hasn’t)

Mashiro Witch – Midnight Marchen – “requiemforxxx -InParadisum-”

Composed by xaki?

Some SQUARE ENIX mobile game about witches that shut down a few years ago like 99% of all mobile games. The music was done by four folks people who wrote a bunch of music for the Higurashi and Umineko series, and while I’m not sure we actually have confirmed credits for most of the soundtrack it seems like this one was by xaki, who is the coolest Umineko composer to me by a lot. Love the modulated noise bursts and reversed synth doing random things at 1:29

UNICORN OVERLORD – “Farde Mal Diavolo -Destroy Evil, then Come-”

Composed & arranged by Mitsuhiro Kaneda
Vocals by EUREKA REPUBLIC

I haven’t listened to this soundtrack yet, but it’s Basiscape so you know I’m going to I’m gonna get to it sooner or later. This got them Mitsuhiro Kaneda chords and Mitsuhiro Kaneda rhythms in it
