Listening: iTunes/Apple Music
Info
Short digital release of the system BGM for mobile rhythm game Rotaeno, where you gotta rotate your phone in addition to tapping stuff on the screen. Finally, a rhythm game for the people who constantly pick the chat message “I’m using tilt controls!” in Mario Kart 8 lobbies. System BGM for rhythm games doesn’t get released super often, so it’s always great to see it when it does.
Almost all of the music was done by sound director HyuN (more often known as INFX), but another Korean composer with a much smaller online footprint, MIIM, co-wrote two tracks and wholly wrote a third. HyuN’s solo tracks are all dancey and dance-adjacent electronica, while the MIIM tracks are chiller and incorporate more instruments, with their solo track “Orb Theme” using Egyptian instruments like oud and darbuka for what I can only assume are desert-related reasons, gimme a sec here [asks Google] okay I can now confirm it is for desert-related reasons.
The music’s all alright, nothing super fancy or super out there. My favorites were both of the Hyun-MIIM collaborations, their style was a little more to my taste and the chords made me slightly happier to be alive and hear on this Earth listening to video game music.
Recommended tracks:
-
“Shop Theme” (HyuN) has telephone noises in it, so I’m legally obligated to post it
-
“After Rain” (HyuN & MIIM) has a really pretty intro
