I played the original 2064: Read Only Memories last year, and I had no idea they were making a sequel until this soundtrack dropped! The first game’s a throwback point-and-click cyberpunk detective game with music by 2 Mello; the game’s pretty clearly inspired by stuff like Snatcher and it’s got a funky, FM-ish mystery soundtrack to match. I think I meant to give the soundtrack a proper listen on its own at some point but I never actually did, whoops!
Anyway, for the sequel they got coda, a cool guy I like who’s written this kind of music before. Aside from the two “Mix” tracks (album arrangements?) which indulgently dip into old synthesizer territory, this soundtrack is even more FM-y than its predecessor; I’m not sure if they’re 100% “authentic” PC-88/98 chiptunes but they certainly sound like they could be. You’ve got your spacey opener, your jazz and funk and new jack swing, your lighter mood theme and your darker ambient theme, all the stuff you’d expect for a soundtrack like this. It’s fun.
Recommended tracks:
-
“Night Dive (Reprise)” gets cool to me from 0:42 to the end, briefly progressing from Morse code over static to the stacked short rhythms thing I love to some sinister chords to close it out
-
“Welcome to MINERVA” gets you tapping your toes before bucking you off the beat at 0:56
-
“Cortex Clues” has that crowd-pleasing giant FM slap bass sound (you know the one)
-
“Golden Meditation” is the spooky zone
