Virtual Lab (VB, 1995)

Game info: Wikipedia, Bad Game Hall of Fame
Listening: emulated audio, YouTube (single video)

Credits

This game has no staff roll. It was developed solely by Megumi Ayase under the trade name Nacoty (see this interview for more), but she never mentioned doing the sound of Virtual Lab or any other game, so I’m not sure that it wasn’t done by someone else.

Info

This is a falling-block puzzle game fairly similar to the old Mac shareware game Chiral where you have to join a bunch of connected tiles together into a closed circuit in order to clear them, except with gravity and also a weird and somewhat disconcerting biological theme.

In a 100% improvement over the last game, Virtual Lab game has two entire pieces longer than ten seconds!!! It’s just funny that we’ve had the two shortest Virtual Boy soundtracks back-to-back, random clustering do be like that sometimes. Unfortunately I think the music that does exist here is even less interesting than what’s in Space Invaders Virtual Collection, though the composer did try to get some instrumental variety in there what’s there.

Recommended track:

  • Level Theme” has kind of a lowkey, contemplative electronic music feel to it

(track title is unofficial)
