Info

Here’s a game based on Kevin Costner’s critically and commercially unsuccessful 1995 film Waterworld. Ocean Software made a few different versions of this game for different systems and they all play a bit differently; this one’s a 3D third-person arena shooter where you have to protect swimmers from waves of oncoming enemies by shooting them with your boat.

The music was done by Jonathan Dunn of Ocean Software, though the two main tracks are adapted from Dean Evans’s score for the SNES version of the game: the title screen arranges “Diving” and the in-game music arranges “Map Screen.” I think you’re probably better off just listening to the extremely vibe-y original pieces, though it’s fun listening to the only Virtual Boy soundtrack that deployed some tracker-y sounding arpeggios and leads, very 1990s European VGM.

I’m a little curious about the music utilization in the game, because the title screen theme is almost a five minute loop and five times longer than the in-game music, so I’m wondering if they didn’t actually mean to swap those tracks???

Recommended tracks:

  • Level Theme” was I think the better conversion of the two converted tracks

  • Unused Song” is a weird, semi-ambient piece with a background arpeggio that keeps fluctuating in tempo

(track titles are unofficial)
