Alright, I have returned from my traditional GDQ Slumber to finish off the OMEGA series. If Vol.2 was the slow, atmospheric volume, Vol.3 is the jaunty volume, with the first half of the album in particular having several cheery town or town-related themes with an upbeat energy level that we haven’t really seen before. I mentioned in my post for the first volume that there’s kind of a narrative flow to these albums but also kind of not, and the slamming of all of those tracks here on the last album is a pretty good example of the “kind of not” part. Stylistically they’re not especially my thing so I didn’t find them super exciting; the one by Munegon (track 10, “Mushroom Dance”) was my favorite because it has some decent countermelodic writing in it.
Aside from the lively tracks, there are also more slower, emotional tracks on this volume than usual, which also tend to not be my favorite thing in the whole world. Plus, there are a bit less fucked up battle themes. So this is quite likely my least favorite album in the series unfortunately, you just can’t argue with the math.
Munegon was probably my favorite contributor this time and not Koichi Kyuma, since Munegon again did a fairly respectable job across multiple tracks in different styles while Kyuma only did one that I really liked (though it’s my favorite track on the album!). We got our first and only battle theme by mi-do on this album and it’s not bad, probably my favorite or second-favorite track by them across the series, so I kind of wish they did more!
Recommended tracks:
-
“Illusory Village of Snow” (Kyuma) starts off with a super Secret of Mana-sounding riff
-
“The Structure of the Forest Depths” (Munegon) was the only majorly orchestral track on this album, I’m now realizing
-
“Broken Doll” (Ikki) switches between 4/4, 7/8, and 6/8
-
“Deep Blue” (Yoshiki Ara) is the kind of fake-piano-licks-and-sick-bass groovy track the fans love
-
“Hunting the Wicked” (mi-do) starts off with some cool noises
-
“Clear night” (Fuwaw) closes out the album and project in a fittingly emotional way
(some track titles are unofficial translations by me)
