Listening/music info: collection release (disc 2)
Info
The Taiko Risshiden V collection soundtrack is the first time music from any of the games besides the first has been officially released. For the compilation, they decided to include the PlayStation 1 version of the second game’s soundtrack, not the earlier Windows version (which is very similar, possibly just the same music data rendered slightly differently) or PC-98 chiptune version.
This one sounds much more like “simulation RPG set in Sengoku Japan” than the arranged album for the first game, lots of Japanese instruments and pentatonic melodies mixed in with MIDI RPG soundtrack staples. There’s a lot of slower, pretty music in this game too, it seems that battle isn’t really the primary focus of the series. I didn’t find this score to be particularly distinctive, but there are cool moments.
Recommended tracks:
-
“Shibata Katsuie’s Theme” (track 6) has a couple of chord movements I wasn’t expecting in the sections starting at 0:20
-
“Construction of Sunomata Castle” (track 20) has some nice, understated sectional orchestral writing, particularly at 1:51 (24:44 in the linked video)
(track titles are unofficial translations by me)
