Info
This was an album by the Virtual Video Game Music Project, a seemingly short-lived project organized by Yuji Takenouchi where a bunch of random video game composers got together and wrote some fake soundtracks for video games that don’t exist. This one’s shmup-themed, which will probably be obvious from the title GALAXY EXPLORER and also the cover art of a starfighter.
All of the tracks here definitely have the flavor of a shump soundtrack, although as you might expect from an album with eighteen composers, there’s not a lot of consistency in the music besides that; they all took their own individual compositional and instrumental approaches to the tracks. A lot of cool music, though! Which you’d hope, given that a lot of cool composers were involved.
Recommended tracks:
-
“Preparation – PREPARATION” (Manabu Namiki) is some classic Namiki fusion
-
“Crimson Flame Planet – STAGE 2 (PLANET-FLAME)” (Norio Nakagata) has some out of control piano for a bit
-
“Let’s break through the forest obstacles! – STAGE 5 (PLANET-PLANT)” (Toshiya Yamanaka) is some classic Yamanaka fusion
-
“Sol Sistere – STAGE 8 (PLANET-DARKNESS)” (Junya Nakano) is a trance track with some cool sounds in it
