Info
Dan Forden was the original composer of the Mortal Kombat series, and the first two games in particular have incredibly great soundtracks: heavy, proggy music with deep percussion and overwhelming octatonicity. He just released a li’l three track vocal EP, which I think is his first ever release of original, non-game music? (Though I just learned he was briefly part of a prog band…)
The songs here are all medium tempo rock that aren’t outwardly reminiscent of prog in terms of rhythm or song structure except “The Blink of an Eye” (which has a “normal song by a prog band” vibe to it), but from the start you’ll be bombarded with wild chord changes that are definitely reminiscent of prog. I think the comparison I’d have drawn on my own is Gentle Giant, but while talking with my friend Chimeratio he introduced me to Echolyn and they work really well. Very cool “debut” album with an uncommon feel to it, I’m gonna be listening to this one for a while.
Recommended track:
-
“The Riddle of the Red House” sets the tone of the album in the first ten seconds with its chord progression
-
“The Blink of an Eye” has the fullest arrangement on the album, with an easygoing, pretty synth solo at 2:03
