0002:a galaxy odyssey (2011)

Listening: iTunes/Apple Music, Amazon

Info

Well here’s a random Vocaloid collaboration album produced by “galactic music label GINGA” in 2011, and released digitally internationally a couple of years ago which is pretty swell. Well I say “random” but as always it’s not actually random: I happen to already be familiar with a couple of the artists on this album, so I checked it out. Since the album title has “galaxy” in it and the label was described as “galactic” and the label’s name is the Japanese word for “galaxy,” you might expect the music to be space-themed, and while a handful of the tracks do have a spacey vibe, it’s mostly more just pop-flavored electronica of various sorts. Sometimes chill and sometimes dance clubby. And sometimes it’s none of that, but weird rock instead! That happens twice!

I’d say I actively enjoyed listening to about half of the tracks on the album, which solidly puts it up into Not Bad territory.

Recommended tracks:

  • musion” (KTG) has a cool extended polymetric bit with the song’s title at 2:19

  • Dissociative Texture” (FICUSEL) is pretty typical of this artist’s Vocaloid style of having a bunch of random staccato instrument interjections, Toshiyuki Sudo-esque

  • Rain Of Light” (geppei-taro) is the only instrumental track on the album and is one of the tracks I’d characterize as actively spacey

  • Miku-san” (DaijoubuP) is by a big weirdo who makes funny avant-prog, I should probably give a warning that this song has a bunch of sudden loud noises in it

(third title is an official translation from the artist; fourth title is an unofficial romanization by me)
