Here’s a block-pushing puzzle game included in issue 48 of the Dutch-produced MSX2 disk magazine FutureDisk. Tadahiro Nitta, who wrote a piece for issue 47 and I guess is in pretty hot demand for MSX music (as he should be), wrote the tiny soundtrack for this comprising three full pieces and three jingles. It’s an ice-themed game but there isn’t really an ice theme or any obviously overarching theme to the music, it’s just some MSX tuneage ticking the “adventure” and “ambient” boxes. It’s quite a bit simpler than Nitta’s recent MSX work on both compositional and technical implementation levels, which makes sense because these songs had to coexist with a game engine this time and couldn’t just use 100% of the MSX CPU for five minutes of utter nonsense, but Nitta’s great and there are still some cool bits of writing and instrument design.
I want to give special shoutouts to the jingles, because they’re all pretty great. Maybe now that Cohost has audio embeds, some year I’ll finally start the good jingle blog…
Recommended tracks:
-
“A boy goes on a journey” has some nice, video game-ass countermelodies at 1:11
-
“The Road Continues” was my favorite jingle, very mysterious sounding
