Info

We once again return to our fortnightly Hajime Sugie posting, because if there’s one thing in this world I respect, it’s the primacy of the bit. As a sequel to void tRrLM();, this one has a pretty similar musical style, though I’d say it’s a little more EDM and a little less htoL#NiQ, making it slightly less distinctive as a result. This soundtrack also features the most musical range I’ve seen from Sugie in a soundtrack to date, having tracks with “Sweeeeets” and “baroque” and “fancy” that all sound like you might expect them to, though unfortunately I was a bit underwhelmed by most of these tracks too. None of it’s bad, it just doesn’t have quite as much of the sound design and moodiness that I really appreciate from his earlier soundtracks.

The last two tracks are vocal pieces not written by Sugie. The first is the game’s ending theme, produced by ZIZZ STUDIO; no composer is listed on either the album or game, which is weird because usually ZIZZ provides at least that much info. The second is an “original song” composed by Ryo Kurata with vocals by Hanon which was used promotionally but I’m not positive was actually used in the game; it’s a pretty standard pop song.

Recommended tracks:

All selections composed by Hajime Sugie, except where noted.

  • void gotJackpot();” was my favorite of the random genre tracks, on account of the glitching

  • void resumeConnection();” has a squeaky high synth and white noise bursts that I both enjoy

  • void SNRatioTooHigh();” has some cool modulated synths, including one that sounds like a phone ringing

  • setEnv(‘unsafe’);” mixes chippy synths and drums with more normal Sugie sounds and chords

  • Spes est” (ZIZZ STUDIO, vo. Haruki Minami) fits in really well with Sugie’s work from a sound design perspective, really pretty song with subtle time signature changes
