Just found out that Lemm posted a new song on YouTube two months ago, apparently because I never subscribed to his channel. Well, I have now, so we’re never going to have this specific, embarrassing problem again.
Lemm is my favorite vocal synthesizer producer. He mostly uses Vocaloid, of course, though for this song he used the SynthV voice Chifuyu Hanakuma. His music generally throws pretty, delicate orchestral music into a blender with drum ‘n’ bass/IDM, big chords, and subtle odd time and time signature changes, all with impeccable production and synthy audio design. heoliene has the best description of how Lemm’s music feels on their upload of his 2012 album Arkhē:
lemm defines a hyper futuristic world of fragile mechanisms made of porcelain and glass, running on the whirling memories gifted to its synthetic vocalist.
(Incidentally, Arkhē is available digitally overseas on iTunes and Amazon and boy can I not recommend it enough)
His new song, “Platform 5,” is a very Lemm song, sending you through a long, progressive journey across emotional soundscapes. This song features more rap-style vocal delivery during the verses than I’m used to in a Lemm song, but of course he makes it work. My favorite parts are the two sections accompanying the lyrics “The train now approaching platform 5,” first at 0:37 with some chaotic nonsense in 5-bar-phrased 4/4 and then later at 5:04 with some fun fake piano in actual 5/4. Haha do you get it, how both times the train approaches platform 5 the song uses a 5-based rhythm, he did a thing.
Lemm also made the video himself. It’s kind of unfair, really.
